We are $8400.00 on our way to the $65,000 needed to fund S2S programs for this year. Please consider helping in any further way you are able.

Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh celebrated its 6th annual benefit dinner on Friday, September 9, 2011. The event was held at The Pittsburgh Athletic Association in Oakland with 90 people in attendance. After enjoying a tasty dinner, folks had the opportunity to hear from two speakers about their time in San Jose. Gabe is a medical student who spoke about the need for medical care and the advances Shoulder to Shoulder has made in San Jose. Karen, a non-medical volunteer, spoke of the involvement of the local health committee members. We had hoped to Skype with the health committee in San Jose, but they were having difficulty accesing the internet. Thank you to everyone for a successful night.

A very cohesive, fun-loving medical team made their way to San Jose in October 2010. Other than lots of rain, several relatively short bouts of “tourista,” & the usual multiple bot flies and machete wounds, the group cam through unscathed and very appreciative of the experience. Several meetings and initiatives were instituted, and/or continued with the local health committee. The Child Health Initiative screened > 400 children in surrounding villages. The Water Filter Project continues to flourish with approximately 100 new filters distributed to some of the more remote villages. A newly developed Women’s Health Initiative to increase, and teach, cervical cancer screening was instituted and very well-received. The feeding program continues to thrive, providing necessary nutrition for the young and elderly, while boosting the local economy. Future projects include further expansion of the midwife education project: expanding the focus of the clinic to include education and prevention; a domestic violence reduction program; & stress management.

On Friday, September 10 nearly 100 friends gathered at The Pittsburgh Athletic Association for an enjoyable evening of food and conversation. This celebrated the fifth anniversary dinner for Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh. The highlight of the evening was our time to Skype with members of the health committee in San Jose del Negrito, Honduras.

Through your generosity, we were able to raise $6500.00 for our work in the S2S clinic there. Thank you for your support.

Our brigade was very successful. We dedicated our new clinic building with a ceremony on Tuesday, March 24. The health committee decorated the clinic and planned a beautiful day of events. Many local leaders were also invited. We also began a new project during this brigade. It is The Well Child Health Initiative. We saw over 400 children during several away trips to other villages. The children were enrolled in the program via a computer program. They were weighed and measured. They had an eye exam and had their hemoglobin checked. They were given medicine for their eyes and to prevent parasites. They had their teeth varnished. They received a physical exam and were given medications for any acute problems. These same children and more will be followed on subsequent visits to Honduras. We also hired a new full time Honduran doctor. His name is Wilmer Trochez.
