A medical brigade of 14, consisting of family med physicians and residents, med students and pharmacy residents, recently trekked from Pittsburgh to our clinic in San Jose del Negrito in the mountains of Honduras. The group was first briefed on current daily clinical activities, which include: chronic care programs for diabetes, hypertension and asthma, pregnancy clinic days (usually young and first-time moms), the unreliability of access to water, and the 25-50% reduction in current crop production.

While on site, the members of the medical brigade were able to see hundreds of additional patients and to provide support to the existing staff. The group also went to the neighboring community of LaGuacamaya and provided medical services to 120 villagers there. Dr. Meyer said that the clinic staff consistently offers a high level of quality care and are very engaged within the community.

Dr. Tania told the group that “my dream was to be able to become a doctor and care for a community so that the health and wellness in that place could improve.  I am living my dream”.
