The MAMA (Mujeres Amigas Millas Aparte— Women Friends Miles Apart) project is a social service program of the Mennonite Church that works with poor families in Honduras with a special focus on children. Bringing the MAMA Project to San Jose would greatly enhance the progress being made in San Jose to combat childhood malnutrition.

The MAMA Project has expertise in partnering with local women to provide comprehensive nutrition programs that include education of other mothers, feeding programs for young children, family food production, gardening, community organizing and child care.

The MAMA Project uses milk and a soybean cookie in their feeding programs. This has been a very successful model and we are hopeful that they will be able to work with us in San Jose.

A meeting has been scheduled for the health committee, representatives from MAMA , and Medardo Rodriguez from Shoulder to Shoulder to further explore this collaboration. MAMA Project representatives are willing to take this on as a new site, but need a commitment from a core group of local women, as well as funding support for food and supplies.
